I will now discuss how I, as an individual, am able to apply what I have learned about interdisciplinary thinking and research to new situations.
Identify assumptions I had about interdisciplinary studies prior to this class
Make connections to other sources: news, outside texts, the course reading, etc.
Make connections to my own experiences
Define my new understanding of “interdisciplinarity”
Suggest a plausible scenario(s) that I could anticipate in my future for applying what I have learned this semester.
When I was looking at different majors to switch to, I still didn't know entirely what I wanted to focus on. I noticed that Interdisciplinary Studies allowed for two different fields of focus, but I had assumed that the two fields would be independent of each other. I quickly learned that the opposite was true.
Interdisciplinary studies was entirely focused on integrating knowledge from different disciplines, perspectives, ideas, and concepts, to create a more robust solution or understanding of a problem or topic. With this newfound understanding, I started to elevate my creative and critical thinking.
I began to apply it to my work in IT by incorporating new views and concepts like functionality, design, and inclusivity in my everyday problem solving. In addition to my work life, I began to consider national and global issues from different perspectives to better understand every detail of the issue, like analyzing mental health from behavioral, social, physical, environmental, genetic, and nutritional points of view.
In the future, I envision applying the interdisciplinary knowledge I learned so that I can be a successful therapist. Synthesizing information from multiple fields and utilizing it is the entire basis of Interdisciplinary studies. This synthesis is extremely useful, because I believe that a therapist should draw from multiple fields of knowledge to form a more complete understanding of a situation or problem. In doing so, they can provide more complete, creative, open minded, and considerate help, and that is what I hope to strive for.
